WordPress Security Hardening

Most WordPress sites are not hacked by someone targeting them personally. They are found by automated bots scanning for known plugin vulnerabilities, weak passwords and exposed files. That is good news, because it means a handful of well-applied controls block the large majority of attacks. The problem is that security plugins are often installed with default settings and forgotten, while the real gaps sit elsewhere: an old administrator account for a past contractor, writable core files, or a plugin with a known vulnerability that nobody updated.

We harden at several levels. At the edge, a web application firewall such as Cloudflare or Sucuri filters malicious requests and bots before they reach your server. On the login, we enforce strong passwords and two-factor authentication, limit login attempts and remove or rename unnecessary accounts. Inside WordPress, users get the lowest role that lets them do their job, file editing from the dashboard is disabled, XML-RPC is turned off or restricted if you do not need it, and file and folder permissions are set correctly. On the server, we check PHP version, directory listing, exposed backups and sensitive files.

Hardening only works if it stays in place. We set an update policy that says what gets updated, how often and how it is tested, add vulnerability monitoring for your installed plugins and themes, and configure file change and uptime alerts. You get a written record of every setting, so your team or a future developer knows exactly how the site is protected.

What's included

What You Get

Web application firewall

Cloudflare, Sucuri or a plugin-level firewall configured with rules for WordPress, bot protection and rate limiting on sensitive endpoints.

Login protection

Two-factor authentication for privileged users, login attempt limits, strong password rules and optional login URL protection.

Least-privilege user roles

An audit of every account, unused users removed, roles reduced to what each person needs and shared logins replaced with individual accounts.

File and configuration hardening

Correct file permissions, dashboard file editing disabled, sensitive files protected, directory listing turned off and XML-RPC disabled or restricted.

Update policy

A documented policy for core, plugin and theme updates, including security patches applied quickly and other updates tested on staging first.

Monitoring and alerts

Vulnerability alerts for installed plugins and themes, file integrity checks, uptime monitoring and login activity logging.

How it works

Our Process

01

Security review

We review users, plugins, server settings, firewall and logs, then agree a hardening plan, scope and fixed price.

02

Harden on staging

Changes that could affect functionality, such as firewall rules and XML-RPC, are tested on staging first so nothing legitimate is blocked.

03

Apply and verify

Hardening is applied to the live site with a backup in place, and we check logins, forms, payments and integrations still work.

04

Document and monitor

You receive a record of every setting and the monitoring alerts are routed to the right people.

Deliverables

  • A security review report with findings ranked by risk
  • A configured firewall with WordPress-specific rules
  • Two-factor authentication active for all privileged users
  • A cleaned user list with least-privilege roles
  • A written update policy for your site
  • Monitoring and alerts set up, with a record of all settings

FAQ

WordPress Security Hardening: Questions Answered

Is a security plugin enough?

A security plugin is useful, but on its own it misses things like weak hosting settings, old admin accounts and outdated plugins. A firewall in front of the server also stops attacks before they use your server's resources. We combine a few well-configured tools rather than stacking several security plugins that overlap.

What affects the cost of hardening?

The number of sites, users and plugins, the hosting environment, whether you need edge firewall setup, how many integrations must be tested against new rules and any compliance requirements. A single brochure site is quick to harden. A store or membership site with many integrations takes more testing.

Will hardening break anything?

Some settings can block legitimate features, for example a mobile app that uses XML-RPC or an integration calling the REST API. That is why we review integrations first and test rules on staging. If something is blocked after launch, we adjust the rule quickly.

What access do you need?

A WordPress administrator account, hosting control panel or SSH access, and DNS or Cloudflare access if we are setting up an edge firewall. We also need a list of the people who should keep access so we can clean up user accounts safely.
