WordPress Plugin and Theme Troubleshooting
When a plugin update breaks your site, two plugins fight each other or a theme update wipes out your changes, we isolate the exact cause, fix it and leave your site in a state where updates are safe again.
Plugin & Theme Troubleshooting
Most WordPress sites depend on dozens of plugins written by different developers, plus a theme that may have been edited directly over the years. Usually that works. Then an update changes a hook, two plugins load different versions of the same library, or a theme update overwrites custom code that was never moved to a child theme. The symptoms are confusing: a feature stops working, a page loads blank or the editor refuses to save.
We isolate conflicts systematically on a staging copy, never by switching plugins on and off on your live site. We start with the error logs and browser console, then narrow down using a clean theme and selective plugin deactivation until the conflict reproduces with the smallest set of components. Once we know exactly which plugin, version and code path are involved, we fix it in the right place: a compatibility patch in a small custom plugin, a configuration change, a pinned version while the developer releases a fix, or a replacement.
We also deal with the longer-term risks. Abandoned plugins that have not been updated in years are a security and compatibility problem, and we find maintained alternatives and migrate their data. Direct edits to a parent theme are moved into a child theme so future updates do not wipe them out. The aim is a plugin and theme setup you can update with confidence.
What You Get
Conflict isolation
Systematic testing on staging to find the exact plugins, theme functions or scripts that conflict, with the cause documented.
Failed update recovery
Sites stuck in maintenance mode, half-completed updates and version mismatches resolved and brought back to a consistent state.
Compatibility fixes
Small, targeted patches in a custom plugin to resolve conflicts without editing third-party code that would be overwritten on update.
Abandoned plugin replacement
Unmaintained or vulnerable plugins identified, maintained alternatives chosen and settings and data migrated to the replacement.
Child theme setup
Direct parent theme edits moved into a child theme or custom plugin, so the parent theme can update safely.
Plugin stack review
A review of every installed plugin for overlap, maintenance status, performance impact and need, with a recommended leaner setup.
Our Process
Backup and staging
We take a full backup and create a staging copy so troubleshooting never affects your visitors or customers.
Isolate
Using logs, the browser console and controlled deactivation, we narrow the problem down to the specific components and code involved.
Fix or replace
We apply the right fix, whether a patch, a setting, a child theme move or a replacement plugin, and test the affected features.
Deploy and report
The fix goes live with a backup in place, and you get a summary of the cause, the change and any follow-up recommendations.
Deliverables
- A written diagnosis naming the conflicting plugin or theme code
- The fix deployed and tested on your live site
- A child theme or custom compatibility plugin where needed
- Replacement plugins installed with settings and data migrated
- A plugin inventory with status and recommendations
- Notes on safe update order for your specific setup

Plugin & Theme Troubleshooting: Questions Answered
Why not just deactivate the plugin that breaks things?
Sometimes that is the answer, but the plugin usually does a job you need. Deactivating it can also leave orphaned shortcodes, broken pages or lost settings. We find the specific conflict so you can keep the functionality, or we replace the plugin properly with its data migrated.
How is troubleshooting priced?
If the problem is clear, we quote a fixed price. If the cause is unknown, we start with a short diagnosis at an agreed cost, then quote the fix. Replacing abandoned plugins is priced per plugin based on how much data and configuration needs to move.
What access do you need?
A WordPress administrator account and hosting or SFTP access. If you use premium plugins, license keys or account access let us download current versions and check the developer's changelogs and support notes.
What if the plugin developer has to fix the bug?
Sometimes the bug is in the plugin itself. In that case we apply a safe temporary workaround or pin the working version, report the issue to the developer with clear reproduction steps, and remove the workaround once an official fix is released.
