Android App Maintenance & Updates

Google Play does not let apps stand still. Each year the target API level requirement moves up, and apps that fall behind can be blocked from updates or hidden from users on newer Android versions. Policies on permissions, data collection and payments change several times a year. Meanwhile Android vitals tracks your crash and ANR rates, and apps with poor stability can be shown less prominently in the store.

Our maintenance plans make someone responsible for all of that. We update your target API level ahead of Google's deadlines and adapt the app to the behavior changes that come with it, review Play policy updates against your app, and keep AndroidX, Kotlin, Gradle and third-party libraries current. Crash and ANR data from Android vitals and Crashlytics tells us which problems hurt the most users, and those get fixed first.

Each plan includes time for small features and improvements, agreed with you every month. ISOL Systems has run long-term website maintenance since 2010, and we bring the same habits to apps: written reports, clear priorities and one point of contact, our founder Muhammad Moin Razzaq.

What's included

What You Get

Target API level updates

We raise your target API level ahead of Google's yearly deadline and handle the behavior changes that come with it, such as permissions, background limits and notification rules.

Play policy compliance

We review Google Play policy announcements against your app and update permissions, declarations and the Data safety form when something changes.

Android vitals and crashes

We monitor crash and ANR rates in Android vitals and Crashlytics, find root causes and fix the issues affecting the most users first.

Library and build upgrades

Kotlin, Gradle, the Android Gradle Plugin, AndroidX and third-party SDKs upgraded in controlled steps, with testing after each step.

New Android release testing

We test each new Android version and new device classes such as foldables, and fix layout or behavior problems before your users find them.

Small features and fixes

A monthly allowance for bug fixes, new screens and small features, released through a testing track before production.

How it works

Our Process

01

Takeover review

We get the project building, check its target API level, policies, dependencies and vitals data, and list urgent risks with a fixed price.

02

Stabilize

We fix urgent compliance issues and the worst crashes and ANRs first, so the app is in good standing.

03

Monthly cycle

Each month we agree priorities, ship updates through testing tracks and send a short report.

04

Yearly cycle

Ahead of each target API deadline and Android release, we plan and ship the required updates.

Deliverables

  • Initial health report on build status, target API level, policy risks and vitals
  • Updated target API level and dependencies, tested on real devices
  • Crash and ANR fixes prioritized by user impact
  • Policy review notes and updated Play Console declarations
  • Monthly report of updates, fixes and stability trends
  • Documented build, signing and release process

FAQ

Android App Maintenance & Updates: Questions Answered

What happens if I miss Google's target API level deadline?

Google typically stops you from publishing updates until the app meets the requirement, and older apps can become unavailable to users on newer Android versions. Google sometimes allows a short extension if you request it in Play Console. We plan the update months ahead so you are not relying on an extension.

Can you maintain an app we did not build, even if it is in Java?

Yes. Many apps we are asked to look after mix Java and Kotlin or use older XML layouts. We maintain them as they are, and if parts become costly to keep alive, we can migrate them gradually as part of a modernization plan rather than a full rewrite.

What determines the monthly cost?

The size and age of the app, how far behind its libraries and target API level are, how many SDKs it uses and how much feature time you want each month. The first months often cost more if there is catch-up work. We agree a fixed monthly fee after the takeover review.

Who keeps control of the app?

You do. The app stays in your Play Console account and the code in your repository, with us added as users. Signing keys are managed through Play App Signing so access is never tied to one developer. If you end the plan, you keep everything plus the documentation.
