Android App Redesign and Modernization
We move older Java, XML or hybrid Android apps to Kotlin and Jetpack Compose in planned stages, cleaning up the architecture and improving speed without stopping your releases.
Android App Redesign & Modernization
Many Android apps still in use were written years ago in Java with XML layouts, or wrapped as a hybrid web view. They work, but each change takes longer than it should, crashes are hard to trace, the interface looks dated next to modern Material apps and newer team members avoid touching certain files. A full rewrite sounds attractive, yet it often freezes releases for months and throws away logic that already works.
We prefer incremental modernization. Kotlin and Java run side by side, and Compose screens can live inside an existing View-based app, so we migrate screen by screen and module by module while the app keeps shipping. Along the way we introduce a clear MVVM architecture with ViewModels, a repository layer and coroutines, replace outdated libraries and add tests around the logic that matters most. For hybrid apps, we decide with you which screens benefit from going native and which can stay web-based for now.
Performance work runs through the whole project: startup time, scrolling, memory use and app size, measured before and after. Our founder, Muhammad Moin Razzaq, leads the plan directly, and you get a written roadmap so you always know which parts of the app have moved and what is next.
What You Get
Code and UX audit
We review the codebase, architecture, dependencies, vitals data and interface, and identify which areas cause the most bugs, slowness or user frustration.
Incremental Kotlin migration
Java classes converted to idiomatic Kotlin module by module, with tests around critical logic so behavior stays the same while the code improves.
Compose interface redesign
Screens rebuilt in Jetpack Compose with Material Design 3 and your brand, introduced alongside existing XML screens until the migration is complete.
MVVM architecture cleanup
Business logic moved out of activities and fragments into ViewModels and repositories, with coroutines and Flow replacing older threading and callback patterns.
Hybrid to native
For web-view or older cross-platform apps, we rebuild the most used screens natively first and keep a clear plan for the rest.
Performance improvements
Startup time, scrolling, memory and app size measured and improved using baseline profiles, profiling tools and removal of unused code and libraries.
Our Process
Audit and roadmap
We audit the app and give you a staged roadmap with priorities, a fixed price per stage and expected improvements.
Foundation
We update build tools and libraries, add the new architecture and set up tests so later stages are safer.
Migrate in stages
We redesign and migrate screens in planned batches, shipping each through testing tracks while normal releases continue.
Measure and finish
We compare performance and stability against the starting point, remove leftover legacy code and hand over documentation.
Deliverables
- Audit report covering code, architecture, dependencies, vitals and interface
- Staged modernization roadmap with a fixed price per stage
- Redesigned screens in Jetpack Compose and Material Design 3
- Kotlin codebase with MVVM architecture and tests for critical logic
- Before and after measurements for startup, stability and app size
- Architecture notes for future developers
Tools & Platforms
We pick tools for your project, not the other way round. If you already use a platform, we work inside it.
Android App Redesign & Modernization: Questions Answered
Is it better to rewrite the app from scratch?
Sometimes, but less often than people expect. If the app is small, or its logic is wrong as well as its code, a rebuild can make sense. For most working apps, incremental migration is safer: you keep shipping, existing features keep working and the investment is spread across stages. We recommend one or the other after the audit and explain why.
Will users notice the migration?
They will notice the redesigned screens and, ideally, a faster and more stable app. The migration itself happens behind the scenes. Each stage goes through testing tracks first, and we can use staged rollouts in Play Console so a new version reaches a small share of users before everyone.
What drives the cost of modernization?
The size of the codebase, how tangled the current architecture is, how many screens you want redesigned rather than just migrated, and how many outdated libraries need replacing. Because we price each stage separately, you can control the pace and stop after any stage with a working app.
Should we move to a cross-platform framework instead?
If you also need an iOS app and your Android app is due for a rebuild anyway, React Native or Flutter is worth considering, and we will compare the options honestly. If Android is your main platform or you rely on deep device features, modernizing in native Kotlin usually gives the best result for the investment.
