WordPress Backups, Staging and Controlled Updates

We set up backups you can actually restore from, a staging copy of your site for testing changes safely and a controlled update process, so a bad update, a hack or a server failure becomes an inconvenience instead of a disaster.

Backups, Staging & Updates

Most site owners believe they have backups. Often what they have is a host backup stored on the same server as the site, a plugin that stopped running months ago, or files without a database. The first time anyone checks is when the site is already broken, and that is the worst time to discover the backup is incomplete or years old.

We follow the 3-2-1 rule: at least three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site and separate from your hosting. In practice that means your host's snapshots plus automated backups of files and database sent to independent cloud storage such as Amazon S3 or Backblaze B2, with retention set to match how often your site changes. A store taking orders all day needs more frequent database backups than a brochure site. Most importantly, we test restores. A backup is only proven when it has been restored to a separate environment and the site works.

Staging is the other half. A staging site is a private copy of your live site where updates, new plugins, design changes and code can be tested without risk. We set one up on your host or a separate environment, with a clear process for pushing changes to live without overwriting new orders or content. Updates then follow a controlled routine: backup, update on staging, check, apply to live, verify.

What's included

What You Get

3-2-1 backup setup

Automated file and database backups to independent off-site storage, alongside host snapshots, with retention matched to how often your site changes.

Restore testing

Backups restored to a separate environment to prove they work, with the restore steps documented so anyone on your team can follow them.

Staging environment

A private, password-protected copy of your site that search engines cannot index, for testing updates, plugins and design changes.

Safe deployment workflow

A clear process for pushing changes from staging to live, including database-aware deployment so new orders, users and posts are not overwritten.

Controlled update process

A repeatable routine for core, plugin and theme updates: backup, test on staging, apply to live, verify key pages and functions.

Backup monitoring

Alerts when a scheduled backup fails or storage runs low, so problems are fixed before you need the backup.

How it works

Our Process

01

Review current setup

We check what backups exist, where they are stored, how old they are and whether staging is available, then agree scope and a fixed price.

02

Set up backups and staging

We configure off-site backups, retention and monitoring, and create a staging environment that mirrors the live site.

03

Test restores

We restore a backup to a separate environment, confirm the site works and write down the steps and time it took.

04

Hand over the workflow

You get documentation for backups, restores, staging and updates, and we can run the update routine for you if you prefer.

FAQ

Backups, Staging & Updates: Questions Answered

Are my host's backups not enough?

Host backups are useful, but they are usually stored with the same provider and sometimes on the same infrastructure. If the account is suspended, compromised or the provider has an outage, you may lose access to them. An independent off-site copy protects you from those cases.

What affects the cost of this setup?

The size of the site and database, how often backups need to run, how long they must be kept, the storage provider and whether your host supports staging or we need to set it up separately. Stores and membership sites need more careful staging workflows because live data changes constantly.

How quickly can you restore my site if something goes wrong?

That depends on site size and the cause. Because restores are tested and documented, a typical restore takes far less time than an emergency rebuild. For stores, we also handle recovering any orders placed after the backup was taken, where possible.

What access do you need?

A WordPress administrator account, hosting control panel or SSH access, and either access to your cloud storage account or permission to set one up in your name. Backup storage stays in your account, so you keep full control of your data.
